|Gay Friendly Travel Guide to Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is one of The Canary Islands - located in the Atlantic ocean, off the coast of west Africa.
The main language is Spanish and the currency is the euro. This is an all year destination, but more popular in winter.
High season is 1st October to 31st May and low season is 1st June to 30th September.
This island is often called a "Miniature Continent" due to the different climates and variety of landscapes found here.
Gran Canaria has golden beaches, huge sand dunes, wooded valleys, mountains, and picturesque villages.
Most of the island's tourism is in the south of the island, which is sunnier and has less rain than the north.
The north is more "Spanish" and includes the island's capital, Las Palmas - a lovely, sophisticated, cosmopolitan city.
Gay Gran Canaria
The capital, Las Palmas, has a good selection of gay bars and clubs, and is a wonderful city in its own right -
with excellent hotels, restaurants, museums, art galleries, superb architecture and a cosmopolitan population.
But the main gay attraction in Gran Canaria is Playa Del Ingles - a major resort in the sunny south of the island.
Playa Del Ingles
This major resort is a mecca for gay men - offering several men only, clothing optional, complexes to stay and play.
It is also home to dozens of gay bars and clubs - including the world renowned Yumbo Centre.
The Yumbo Centre is a 4-storey open air shopping and entertainment centre in Playa del Inglés. During the day it is mostly
about shopping, but at night it magically transforms into gay heaven, with 50 gay bars, shops and restaurants.
The Yumbo Centre has a broad spectrum of gay bars, and the excellent lesbian bar Jackies Bar.
The beach here is absolutely HUGE! The picture above shows only part of it. And it is backed by massive dunes.
The gay nudist area is known as "Number 7" at the western end of the beach. The easiest way to find it is to follow the
red-topped posts. And to find the gay cruising area in the dunes, follow the blue-topped posts.
