|Gay Friendly Travel Guide to Melbourne Australia
Melbourne is Australia's cultural capital, and is a very gay-friendly city.
Not as in your face as Sydney, Melbourne is more of a class-act - it has the feel of a sophisticated European city.
The locals here are very proud of Melbourne, and they are very gay-friendly - you will not experience any hostility here.
Melbourne is a multi-cultural city, and this is reflected in the superb variety of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops.
The only possible negative here is the weather - it can change from scorching heat to full on winter storm in just an hour.
But don't let that deter you - Melbourne has plenty to offer indoors when the weather is foul. This is a city of culture, art and
entertainment of almost every kind. Whatever the weather, you'll find plenty to interest you in Melbourne.
The gay scenes here are more low key than in Sydney - but that doesn't mean that they are dull.
This a truly gay-friendly city, and there are gay bars, pubs and restaurants all over town.
But most of the serious gay action takes place in Melbourne's two gay villages - separated by the Yarra River.
North of the river, in the Abbotsford, Collingwood, Fitzroy and Carlton areas, you'll find plenty of leather/bear venues, plus
most of the best sex on site venues in the city. The Laird Hotel is famous throughout the world as a men only bar and hotel,
with the legal right to refuse entry to women. If real-men and leather are your things - this is the place to stay and play.
There are plenty of other real-men, bear, and leather venues to choose from north of the river, as well as some hot saunas.
Brunswick Street also boast some popular lesbian venues.
South of the river is home to a large population of gay men, and is generally more trendy than the north.
St Kilda’s Fitzroy Street is the location of Melbourne’s gay Pride March in February.
This part of town, around St Kilda, is also where most of the gay action is on the south side of the river.
